The NIMHANS Museum   - Appeal for Artifacts and Relevant Material

In order to celebrate the long and glorious tradition of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, in anticipation of its being declared an Institute of National Importance, and in celebration of 75 years of the mental hospital in the current location and 60 years of the Department of Psychiatry, we are in the midst of setting up a NIMHANS Museum. In order to celebrate the long and glorious tradition of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, in anticipation of its being declared an Institute of National Importance, and in celebration of 75 years of the mental hospital in the current location and 60 years of the Department of Psychiatry, we are in the midst of setting up a NIMHANS museum in the erstwhile ‘Children’s OP Block’. The ground floor of the museum will reflect the nearly two centuries of history of development of mental health services in the region, the shifting of the Mental Hospital to its current location, the setting up of AIIMH and NIMHANS and the last three decades of contemporary NIMHANS.

The museum will include, among other things, photographs of years past, artifacts, interesting correspondence, video recordings, press clippings and the like. I urge anyone in possession of material relating to the erstwhile mental hospital in Bangalore and of subsequent years to kindly share such material for creating a historical repository and for consideration of inclusion in the museum.

The source will be duly acknowledged.

Materials may be sent to and further queries in this regard may be obtained from:
