Health Care
The Department of Nursing offers best nursing care services in hospital and in community with initiatives
to make its strategic approaches to psychiatric and neuropatients of world class quality taking it to
the forefront of nursing services in India. To become one of the high quality providers of training and
excellence in research in nursing, department offers systematic instruction, teaching, training and
research exercises with its staff members who have strong commitment , efficiency and dynamic leadership. Concomitant to the
growth of neurosciences – psychiatry specialities and increased technical sophistication, department strives to provide effective nursing
care, training and research.
Nursing care services are provided round the clock to critical, intensive, acute, and emergency
neurological, neurosurgical and psychiatric patients in the hospital.
O.P.D., O.T. and CSSD Services
O.P.D. – Nurses guide and assist the O.P.D patients for their assessment, diagnosis, medication
and follow-up services.
O.T. – Nurses assist neurosurgical team to carry out surgical intervention on emergency as well as
on elective basis.
CSSD – Nursing team manages the CSSD and provides clean and sterilised goods to wards and O.T.
for patient care management.
Out reach Services/External Service
Nursing care is also extended to the community in Rural Mental Health Centre, Sakalwara, in extension
clinics and during home visits. Mass health talks are delivered on a regular basis. Outreach
neuropsychiatric clinics at Kanakapura, Maddur, Madhugiri, Gouribidanur and Gunjur are organised every
month. Nurses are actively participating in clinical care in addition to follow-up case activities.
Health education is offered on a weekly basis in the psychiatric wing as well as in Neurocentre to
patients and their family members.
Group meetings are conducted every week in the psychiatric wards for selected group of
patients.
Counseling programes for Group D
The Counselling programmes for Group D officials are initiated from on 21st October, 2000 onwards.
Counselling Sessions are held on First and Third Saturday of every month and the staff members
requiring long term services are referred to “Psychology Clinic” run by Dept. of Mental Health and
Social Psychology.
Skill Training
Skill such as money management, transportation management, interpersonal relationship, house keeping,
communication and other activities of daily living are taught everyday at 11.00 A.M. in D.P.N.R.
A video has been developed on ‘Skill Training’ to Psychiatric patients by Nurses, which is under
edition.
Margadarshi Meetings
Margadarshi Meetings are conducted with the parents of the mentally ill patients on every third
Saturday of the month in DPNR.
Yoga for patients
Regular yoga classes are conducted for the patients in all the wards of psychiatry wing.
Monthly programme by Nurses for patients/ family members is initiated from 2010. To name few,
Role Play on social skills by patients, Art exhibition, cultural programme by inmates, psychodrama
by patients, family members and staff on expressed emotions, Ill effects of substance abuse, Display of
Yoga by the ward patients, Skit on ‘Home Management of Behaviour problems of MR patients’ etc.
World Mental Health Day - Every year the Department of Nursing celebrates World Mental Health
Day on October 10th where psychiatric patients display their art/craft/talents by way of posters,
handicrafts etc.
Patient Talents’ Day is organised for Psychiatric patients in all the pavilions.
Health Awareness Exhibition - organised by Casualty and Open Psychiatric Wards.
Awards - The department of nursing has the provision of getting Best Ward of the Year Award,
Best Nurse of the Year Award and Best Class ‘D’ official of the year Award from Director and
Vice-Chancellor of NIMHANS, in appreciation of the services rendered by personnel of Nursing
Department.
