A Community Centre for Mental Health Promotion

Services at the Centre for Well-Being

Services at the centre are aimed at individuals who would like to improve their mental health, enhance relationships and decrease stress and prevent problem drinking or smoking. It will also help people with stress related physical health problems to evolve a better mental health lifestyle.

When an adult or child comes into the centre, a trained mental health nurse will evaluate their needs and refer them to the appropriate service. Those who have a psychiatric disorder will not be seen in this centre and will be referred for expert mental health interventions to NIMHANS.

Those who need preventive and promotive mental health help will be offered services at the centre. The following services will be available.

  1. The stress and lifestyle service


    • For whom:
    • Persons experiencing stress and difficulties in coping with stress in relation to work, academics, role and relationships
    • Persons with difficulties in managing lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, due to problems in maintaining their diet, medication, physical activity or other aspects of self care.


      What will be offered:
    • Skills at managing stress effectively and enhancing coping skills through evidence based strategies such as cognitive and behavioural strategies and meditation based programs.
    • Learning self care and management for lifestyle disorders such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity through appropriate behaviour modifiaction and coping skills programs.


  2. FLOURISH – for positive mental health
    For Whom: To cater to the needs of individuals who are inclined to work towards enhancing a sense of meaning and well being in their lives and growing as a person.
    What it would offer: Overall assessment of current levels of psychological well being & functioning, mapping psychological resources, strengths and barriers, individualized feedback and consultation for enhancing positive mental health states


  3. Psychological Care Clinic
    For Whom: For individuals with minor psychological problems/ conditions
    What is offered: Brief psychotherapies and counseling services


  4. Psychological Health for persons with medical illness- Consultation Liaison Psychiatry (CLP) services will be available twice a week that would actively involve specialty hospitals in the area. People with chronic medical illnesses who need to psychological support and services can avail this facility.
    The services would include working with Physicians, General Practitioners (GP) to discuss the interface between Psychiatry and Medicine. It would also include inputs for GPs and specific time during which they could discuss cases as well as referrals from adjoining centres.


  5. For prevention of substance use disorders - mainly focusing on alcohol and tobacco- a team would be stationed on all days for preventive work in the community. Within the centre the team will be available for counseling and advice on three days a week.


  6. Marital enrichment service - This would apply to couples with mild problems or those who wanted to enrich their relationship. The services would either be for a single session or for 2-3 sessions and will be held once a week.


  7. Other services include mental health promotion for the elderly, women with young children and expectant mothers and persons with disabilities.


  8. Training workshops and lectures on parenting, counseling college and school students (especially in the context of exams), working with adolescents and handling relationships effectively will also be conducted. Lectures and film shows for the public on various mental health promotion topics will also be held on a weekly basis.

    • Learning skills to manage day to day stress
    • Handling friendships more effectively
    • Improving communication with parents
    • Coping with academic stress and enhancing study skills
    • Counseling for individuals with minor psychological problems such as anxiety, sleep problems, self esteem issues, eating problems, tension headaches, exam anxiety
    • Enhancing Positive Mental Health well being by discovering and applying your strengths, setting meaningful goals and managing motivation, enhancing positivity in your life and learning to grow as a person
    • Concerns regarding use of addictive substances (alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, etc.)


  2. For Women
    • Strengthening skills for managing day to day stress
    • Enriching marital relationships
    • Anxiety and anger management skills
    • Effective parenting skills
    • Improving coping and time management


  3. For IT and working professionals
    • Learning skills to manage work stress, deadlines, long hours of work
    • Time management skills
    • Handling conflicting situations at work and at family level
    • Balancing work and life
    • Set and achieve goals and maintain motivation levels at work


  4. For Elderly
    • Psychological support for persons with lifestyle disorders such as hypertension, diabetes etc.
    • Assessments and inputs for cognitive deficits such as memory, concentration problems
    • Counseling for elders in distress, handling emptiness
    • Learning to enhance mental health to be confident, cope with the new challenges in life, and participate actively in the community

The Centre is a public health facility for all strata of society and will hopefully fill a much needed gap in the city’s mental health scenario.
