The centre is a multidisciplinary academic and community collaboration with the aim of
understanding injury patterns in populations and facilitating development of prevention
programmes. The centre has been attempting to integrate all issues concerned with injury
prevention and safety promotion and work through a multidisciplinary participatory approach.
The focus of work has been on Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs), suicides, violence and Traumatic
Brain Injury (TBIs). Activities of the centre include applied research projects, capacity
strengthening and human resource development, programme development and implementation,
facilitating development of appropriate policies and advocacy programmes. Activities are
undertaken in collaboration with associated departments and centres, government departments and
international agencies at local, national and international levels.
Mission
The mission of the WHO collaborating centre at NIMHANS is to develop, support, facilitate and
undertake public health - multidisciplinary approach for injury prevention and safety promotion
based on epidemiological understanding in populations. The activities involved in this process
include injury and RTI surveillance, recognition of potentially modifiable risk factors,
evidence based intervention strategies and systematic evaluations. The programmes are built on
the critical aspects of epidemiology, public health, behavioral and social sciences, clinical
medicine, demography, bio-statistics, health planning and policy process. The centre addresses
injury prevention and safety promotion by systematic and coordinated activities of service
delivery, training and capacity development, research and policy components.

Apart from regular staff, research officers with background in medicine, Social work, sociology,
biostatistics, rural development and health management are employed on adhoc basis in various

In addition, we actively collaborate with the faculty from department of Neurosurgery (Dr. B.A.
Chandramouli, Dr. Anand, Dr. Shibu Pillai, Dr. K.V. R. Sastry) in various research projects.
Staff of the Department of Psychiatry and De-addictions services (Dr.V. Benegal, Dr.P.Murthy,
Dr.S.Seshadri,) collaborate in number of injury prevention and research activities. Statistical
support and guidance is provided by the department of Bio-Statistics (Dr. D.K. Subbakrishna).
Health education activities are done in collaboration with the department of Health Education
(Dr. Jayashree Ramakrishna) at NIMHANS.
The center actively works with the Bangalore City Police department, Transport department,
health department in the Government of Karnataka and others. Several NGOs in and outside the
city of Bangalore participate in number of activities and regular intervals.
