Child mental health

Recognizing the lack of a comprehensive survey of child and adolescent mental health problems in the country, the departments of Psychiatry and epidemiology with support from ICMR, surveyed children from urban, rural and slum were screened for presence of child and adolescent psychiatric problems as part of a two centre study (Bangalore and Lucknow). Specific screening and diagnostic instruments were utilized. The stratified randomly sampled 2064 Bangalore children revealed an overall prevalence rate of 12.5%.

Mental Health amongst Women

Different facets of the mental health status of women have been examined in the different studies undertaken by the department both specifically and also as part of other focused studies. Participating in the collaborative study of mental health problems among women by a population based survey in Bangalore; the department has undertaken a large-scale review of mental health problems among women by collating information from unpublished documents and reviewing available literature.

Maternal Mental Health

Though several studies have confirmed the presence of a substantial burden of depression and other minor mental disorders in antenatal and post natal women, it is often neglected and rarely attended to and hitherto there has been very little understanding of this issue within the Indian context. With a public health focus, the department is currently collaborating with the health department of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Practicing professionals and NGOs for sensitization, early detection and skills enhancement for better management maternal mental health problems.
