The department has contributed for strengthening service activities of the Institute by providing
relevant information to various activities within the institute. The department participated in
the extension service programmes of NIMHANS, rendered care, and evaluated the activities which
resulted in enhanced services and bringing in a new direction for the programme. A major
contribution has been in establishing referral services in various community based studies by
developing linkages both within the institute and outside, for patients identified with various
problems. Realising that conducting only research will not be beneficial to the participants in
research activities, the department has combined "service with research" in all its projects
undertaken so far (Studies on suicide, alcohol, health behaviours, traumatic brain injuries, road
traffic injuries, Epilepsy and other (common and rare) neurological problems, etc.,). The
department has contributed towards enhancing the hospital information system at NIMHANS in the
areas of conceptualization of the information network and dimensions of possible services that
could be provided.
Based on recent research in the area of suicides, the department in collaboration with Medico
Pastoral Association, Bangalore Rotary East and Christ College has initiated "Suicide
prevention helplines – SAHAI" which has proved to be a successful model.
