management in health care delivery process, and its increasing relevance to the Brain – Mind –
Behavior axis, the Department of Epidemiology was established at NIMHANS during 1987. The aim of
the Department is to
- develop scientific data in the area of various mental -
neurological disorders and injuries,
- increase applications of epidemiology in health policy and
planning,
- disseminate information to planners, professionals,
administrators and society,
- promote interventions in a cost effective and sustainable manner
based on scientific information.
Keeping in view the multipronged approach of service delivery, human resource development and
research, the department
- conducts epidemiological research in the area of mental and
behavioral disorders - neurological disorders and injuries;
- actively collaborates with related departments within and outside
NIMHANS for epidemiological research;
- develops and provides data for planners, administrators and
professionals for effective implementation of programs;
- participates in formulation-development and evaluation of
intervention programs; and
- imparts training to postgraduate students, trainees, visiting
fellows, non-professionals in both specific and applied areas.
The thrust areas of the department are: injury epidemiology-prevention and control,
Neuroepidemiology and Psychiatric epidemiology and its increasing application in health policy
and planning along with implementation and evaluation. In each of the three areas, research –
service and - manpower development programs are In progress.

Our Mission:
To improve health of communities and to empower and build capacities of policy makers, programme
managers, health care providers, media and civil society regarding the challenges of management
of mental - neurological problems and injuries by developing an evidence basis for policies and
programmes and to ascertain the effectiveness.
Our Vision:
To develop an evidence basis for burden, impact and different dimensions of prioritized mental
and neurological disorders and injuries in terms of public health importance and to promote
evidence based policies and programmes for reducing the suffering and improving quality of life.
Approach:
Using epidemiological and public health principles and tools to develop policies, plans and
programmes based on inter-sectoral participation, evidence based problem solving, advocacy, cost
effectiveness, culture specificity and sustainability.
Goal:
To develop relevant national data on various prioritized mental and neurological disorders for
effective provisioning of services in the community and also to proactively contribute to develop
relevant national policies and programmes.
Facilities Available:
Advanced computer facilities with several statistical packages and information through several
databases with linkages to outside sources are available in the department. A well equipped
library and regularly updated classified information series are in the department. Several
resource materials in the area of advocacy, research, policies are maintained in the department.
A well equipped seminar room capable of accommodating upto 40 people for small meetings is
present with all audio visual facilities.
