 Central Animal Research Facility (CARF)

L aboratory animal science has rightly been recognized as a special branch in many of the teaching and research organizations. With the rapid development and increased interest in the use of laboratory animals for teaching and advanced scientific research -

• The Animal Research Facility (ARL) came into existence at NIMHANS in the year 1980.
• It was built in consultation with other leading and premier research institutions in our country.
• The Animal Research Facility was reorganized in 1984 and named as Central Animal Research Facility (CARF).
• Additional floor was included in 1987

Animal Research at NIMHANS

CARF is a centralized facility designed to cater to the need of all user departments who are interested to pursue research in the field of neurosciences.

The Laboratory animal research facility at NIMHANS has made provisions for each user department to develop specialization on animal experiments in their respective field.

At the Central Animal Research Facility (CARF) we follow rules and regulations and humane care of laboratory animals as proposed by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) and the "Breeding of and Experiments on Animals (Control and Supervision) Rules 1998 and 2001.

Housing - facilities

The central animal research facility has facilities to house small rodents like -

• Rats
• Mice
• Guinea pigs, in addition
• Rabbits
• Aquarium
• Fish

The breeding colonies are maintained under timer controlled lighting system.
