 Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services 

Child and adolescent psychiatry services at NIMHANS were started in the 1950s with objectives of catering to mental health needs of children & adolescents, training mental health professionals and facilitating research in the area of child and adolescent psychiatry.

Clinical Services

Profile of patients catered to:

  • Age group – 0 to 16 years (as on the date of presentation).
  • Disorders -
    1. Developmental disorders (Autism, Mental retardation, Specific Learning Disorders (dyslexia, etc.)
    2. Mental health disorders like ADHD, Mood disorders, OCD, Emotional and Behavioral problems, Substance abuse, Psychosis, Anxiety disorders etc.

Types of Clinical Services available:

Training

Following students/trainees/residents of NIMHANS are regularly posted for a period of 3-4 months for mandatory training in child and adolescent mental health –

  • General Psychiatry junior residents (MD/DPM)
  • MPhil trainees in Mental Health and Social Psychology
  • MPhil trainees in Psychiatric Social Work
  • MSc. Psychiatric Nursing trainees

Advanced training programmes in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offered by the unit-

External trainees –

  • We also offer training to several MD/DPM/DNB residents in Psychiatry and also Pediatrics from Institutions all over India. For decades we have a three month orientation in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry including Mental Retardation.
  • Apart from these, consultants (Psychiatry/Pediatrics) from outside NIMHANS (both Govt. and Pvt. Sectors) hone their skills in child and adolescent mental health at NIMHANS.
  • Several international trainees and consultants, especially from South Asia, avail the opportunity to observe and train with us in child and adolescent mental health.
  • External trainees in Mental Health and Social Psychology, Psychiatric Social Work and Nursing also seek training in the unit. Please see [External trainee/observership info]

Every year a fixed number of students and residents of NIMHANS take up child and adolescent mental health topics for their Post graduate dissertations for part-completion of their course or for their PhD degrees.

Funded projects, drug-trials and qualitative research are also carried out regularly at our services.

Advocacy for Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Advocating for the cause of safe-guarding child and adolescent mental health with active collaboration with NGOs, Child Welfare Committee, ChildLine India Network, Centre for Child Law and other child-related organizations is one of the major activities at the child and adolescent psychiatric services at NIMHANS.
